I've have (finally) watched the movie, after it was recommended to me by many friends. Amazing, it has just joined my league of phenomenal movies. Just like The Matrix and V for Vendetta, it is an anti-system movie. Both violent and vulgar it goes against the modern day consumer society that has developed, raising miscellaneous issues from the lost manhood of our age to the ethics of Communism and the social mind.
Aside from being a phenomenal movie with deep philosophical topics it is also the first psych flick I enjoyed since Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. I won't reveal here what the psychology is about, all I can say is that it was excellently put together. They drop lots of well-concealed hints and even put together the editing the right way. Watch closely, there are things in the movie that flash across for only a fracture of a second, barely long enough for them to register, I recommend you watch it with a remote in your hand so that you could rewind to catch these flashes.
I could talk about this movie for hours, analyzing it, stressing all the points made in the film. Hell, I could probably write a book about everything that was put in it, lol! But I'd like to take this opportunity to talk about the issue of manhood. Tyler Durden states that we are "a generation of men raised by women." On another occasion the two main characters step onto a bus and see and underwear commercial, so Tyler says "oh, so thats what a man looks like". In a coming-of-age session Tyler takes another guy's hand and sets it aflame with a chemical burn, the instinct would be to run away and wash it with water, which would only make it worse, so the guy has to overcome his instinct and have vinegar poured over it.
Manhood, one of the basic issues in the movie, is a big question in our society today. On the one hand, children are being exposed at a younger and younger age to adult content, while at the same time people are coming into adulthood at a later and later age. This, of course, raises the question of what is adulthood? The myth exists that adulthood is the submission to the system, when a person finally gets an education, gets a job and finds a wife, spending the rest of their lives doing the exact same thing over and over again until retirement. This is not Adulthood, this is nothing close to it. I'll cut the bullshit short and give my definition to adulthood- being an adult is about recognizing the power you have and being able to take control of your strength and your life.
Today people do not take control of their lives, they do not stand up for themselves, they do not fight for what they believe. It is no wonder so many women are disappointed at men, it is no wonder that so many men are disappointed at men! We are finally living in an age of options. We all have lots and lots of options, options of what time to wake up and go to sleep, options of what to eat and drink, options of where to live and who to live with, option of what we want to do in our life.
We are all faced by so many options, but none of us really knows how to make these choices. We have true freedom in our hands, yet we refuse to take it because we are scared of it. We prefer to live in a cage and pretend to be free because it is so much easier to live in lies that face the truth. Sure, we are all told that we are free, some of us actually believe this lie. But when was the last time you made a decision on your own? When was the last time you didn't let anyone make up your mind? That you didn't care about what anyone else said?
My homework for you today (lol!) is to go out there and pick a fight with someone you don't know. No, not a physical fight, not even a violent fight. Just a fight where you say one thing and he says another. It can be anything mundane from where you park your car to what flavor slushy you want to buy. Not only do I want you to fight, I want you to lose that fight, but understand why you lost it. And I want you to tell me all about it!
Do this assignment! Don't sit around asking yourself what would this do to me or what does this crazy guy (me) want from you. just fucking do it! I'll post a follow up iust a few days that is not worth missing for the world! Stay tuned ;)
